Gautam Gambhir has formally reached out to Jagat Prakash Nadda, the BJP national president, seeking to be relieved from his political obligations to fully commit to his upcoming role as the Kolkata Knight Riders’ coach for the 2024 IPL season. On X, Gambhir expressed, “I have humbly requested Hon’ble Party President JP Nadda ji to allow me to step back from my political responsibilities to devote myself to my cricket coaching commitments. My gratitude to Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi for the privilege of serving our country. Jai Hind.”

The timing of Gambhir’s decision to step away from politics is in line with speculations about his possible non-inclusion in the next elections. The BJP is expected to announce its major candidates, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections following intensive strategy meetings in Delhi, one of which was notably hosted by the Prime Minister himself.

Since his induction into the BJP in March 2019, Gambhir has been a standout figure in Delhi’s political scene, winning the East Delhi seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections by a significant vote margin. With the IPL season approaching, Gambhir is set to focus on his role with the Kolkata Knight Riders, a team he led to two IPL victories as captain. Gambhir, a key player in India’s 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and 2007 ICC T20 World Cup wins, has an impressive international cricket record, scoring 10,324 runs in 242 matches, including 20 centuries and 63 half-centuries.
