Before joining the film industry, Nawazuddin Siddiqui used to work as a watchman.

Siddiqui made his acting debut in 1999 with a small role in Sarfarosh, starring Aamir Khan.

However, he got the recognition after playing the role of Faizal Khan in Gangs of Wasseypur (2012).

The popular line ‘Permission lena chahiye’ in ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ was inspired by the actor’s real-life romance with a girl, he once liked.

In an interview, Nawaz once said that he would stand in front of the mirror and recreate popular film scenes, during his childhood. A cinema hall was about 45 kilometres away from his village.
