During a press conference in Rajkot, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian cricket team in the Men’s T20 World Cup scheduled for 2024. Shah also assured that Rahul Dravid will continue to guide the team until the commencement of the global tournament.
Rohit Sharma Confirmed as Captain
This will be Rohit Sharma’s second stint as captain in the T20 World Cup, the first being in 2022. After India’s defeat against England in the semi-finals of the last edition, Rohit took a break from Twenty20 Internationals. However, his return to captain the team against Afghanistan in January 2024 strongly suggested his leadership role in the upcoming World Cup, set to take place in the USA and the West Indies in June.

In contrast, following the ODI World Cup final in 2017, Rahul Dravid’s contract had lapsed. Despite the expiration, he was requested to remain part of the support staff for the December–January tour to South Africa without a finalized contract. Shah clarified that initial discussions had taken place regarding Dravid’s role, but further talks would precede any formal decision.

Shah stated, “I will speak with him whenever there is time; there are back-to-back series happening right now. They were in South Africa, followed by a [T20I] series against Afghanistan, and they are currently in England. We had absolutely no opportunity to talk in between.” He indicated that additional discussions would occur before finalizing any decisions about Dravid’s continued involvement with the team.
