The music world is mourning the loss of celebrated ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas, who died on February 26 after battling a long illness, his family announced. At the age of 72, his passing marks the end of an era in the Indian music scene.

In a heartfelt statement released by his family, they expressed their deep sorrow: “It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of the esteemed Padmashri awardee Pankaj Udhas on February 26, 2024, following a lengthy illness.”

Tributes have poured in for Udhas, with fellow singer Sonu Nigam sharing his condolences on Instagram: “A significant part of my childhood has been lost today. Pankaj Udhas ji, you will be dearly missed. It breaks my heart to know you’re gone. Thank you for everything. Om Shanti.”

Born on May 17, 1951, in Jetpur, Gujarat, Udhas made his mark in the music industry with the release of his ghazal album ‘Aahat’ in 1980. He quickly became a household name for ghazal enthusiasts across India, especially with his iconic rendition of ‘Chitthi Aayee Hai’ for the Bollywood film ‘Naam,’ featuring Sanjay Dutt.

Udhas’ departure is a significant loss to fans of ghazal music, but his legacy will undoubtedly live on through his music. Throughout his career, he released numerous albums and performed live, captivating audiences with his emotional renditions. His contributions to Indian music were recognized with the awarding of the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, celebrating his significant impact on the cultural landscape.
