Ratan Tata turns 86, the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, celebrated his 86th birthday on December 28. He holds the title of the ‘most followed entrepreneur’ in India, with over 12 million followers on X (formerly Twitter), according to the 360 ONE Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2023.

Born in Mumbai on December 28, 1937, to Naval Tata and Sooni Tata, Ratan Tata went to Campion School until 8th grade and continued his studies at the Cathedral and John Connon School which is in Mumbai and the Bishop Cotton School which is in Shimla. He studied architecture at Cornell University and briefly worked in Los Angeles before returning to India in 1962.

That same year, he joined the Tata Group, working with the Tata Steel division in Jamshedpur. In 1975, he completed a management course at Harvard Business School and became the chairman of the Tata Group in 1991.

Though not one of the wealthiest people in the country, Ratan Tata is known for his business empire and strong work ethic.

Ratan Tata turns 86 – Money Matters

As of the IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2022, Ratan Tata’s net worth was ₹3,800 crore, placing him 421st. In 2021, he secured the 433rd position with a net worth of ₹3,500 crore. Tata Trusts, contributing 66% of earnings from Tata Sons to charities, significantly impacts his ranking.

As of July 31, 2023, there are 29 publicly listed Tata enterprises with a combined market capitalization of $300 billion (₹24 trillion).

Generosity

Ratan ji Tata, son of Jamsetji Tata, was the main contributor to charitable endeavors within the Tata Group. The Sir Ratan Tata Trust, established in 1919 with ₹80 lakh, is a significant part of his charitable legacy. Tata Trust is now one of India’s prominent charitable foundations.

Tata Group companies, backed by Tata Sons, play a crucial role in philanthropy. Philanthropic trusts owning 66% of Tata Sons’ equity shares support health, education, arts and culture, and more. Under Ratan Tata’s leadership, the Tata Group has played a pivotal role in enhancing healthcare and education in India.
