Get your umbrellas ready and farmers rejoicing — India is set to receive above-normal rainfall this monsoon season, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The rains, expected between June and September, are predicted to hit 105% of the long-period average (which stands at 87 cm).

This isn’t just a weather update; it’s a boost for the backbone of India’s economy — agriculture. With nearly 18% of the country’s GDP and the livelihoods of over 42% of the population tied to farming, a generous monsoon is a welcome forecast. Currently, about 52% of India’s cultivated land relies solely on these seasonal showers, which are also crucial for drinking water supplies and power generation.

Adding to the optimism, El Niño — the ocean phenomenon known for weakening the monsoon — is unlikely to stir trouble this year, according to IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.

But before you start celebrating, experts offer a word of caution: While the overall rainfall is expected to be high, the distribution could be patchy. Climate scientists warn that while the number of rainy days is decreasing, instances of short bursts of heavy rain are rising — sometimes triggering floods and droughts in quick succession.

As always, the monsoon will begin its journey from Kerala around June 1, before sweeping across the country and retreating by mid-September.

So here’s hoping the rain gods are kind — and balanced!
