What began as an innocent venture from his village turned into an unimaginable ordeal when Pudu wandered 23 kilometers into the wild. Unaware of the danger, the young boy found himself surrounded by roaring lions, wandering elephants, and the bone-chilling nights of the African wilderness. Yet, against all odds, he came out alive—earning the admiration of an entire nation and beyond.

Survival in the Wild

Far from home and safety, Pudu relied on his instincts and resourcefulness to make it through. The boy sustained himself on wild fruits he found along the way and dug tiny wells with his bare hands to quench his thirst. His nights were spent huddled on rocky perches, a small defense against the lurking predators of the dark.

A Community Unites

The search for Pudu sparked an incredible community effort. Local Park rangers, villagers, and volunteers tirelessly combed the park for five days. Rangers even used night drum signals, a traditional method of communication, hoping the boy would hear the sound and find his way back. The relentless beating of drums guided the young survivor closer to home.

Zimbabwean Member of Parliament Mutsa Murombedzi called the boy’s safe return a “true miracle” in her heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter). “He wandered away, lost direction, and unknowingly entered the perilous Matusadona game park. For five long days, the boy endured the unforgiving wild, including roaring lions, passing elephants, and cold nights on a rocky perch,” she wrote.

Murombedzi also praised the collective effort of the Nyaminyami community and park rangers. “We are overwhelmed with gratitude to the brave park rangers, the tireless Nyaminyami community who beat night drums each day to help him hear sound and find his way, and everyone who joined the search. Above all, we thank God.”
