San Francisco, CA – March 12, 2024 – Airbnb announced a major policy shift today, prioritizing guest privacy by banning security cameras inside rental properties. This comes after guest concerns about hidden cameras found in listings.
Previously, hosts could install cameras in common areas like hallways and living rooms, but only if they were clearly disclosed upfront. However, social media reports of unexpected cameras in private spaces like bedrooms prompted Airbnb to act.
“We’re simplifying our policy and prioritizing guest privacy,” said Juniper Downs, head of community policy and partnerships at Airbnb. “This means no more indoor security cameras in listings anywhere in the world.”
The new policy takes effect on April 30th, 2024. While doorbell cameras and noise monitors remain allowed for security reasons, hosts must disclose their location and ensure they don’t overlook private areas like outdoor showers.
This update provides Airbnb users with clearer expectations and a stronger focus on privacy during their stays.
