Arrested JMM executive president Hemant Soren to participate in trust vote

Hemant Soren

Hemant Soren, the former chief minister of Jharkhand and leader of the JMM who was arrested, appeared before the legislature on Monday to vote in favor of the government headed by Champai Soren.

A special court in Ranchi gave permission to Hemant Soren, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Executive President, to participate in the trust vote.

In a money laundering case connected to a purported land scam, Hemant Soren was taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on January 31. The court on February 2 remanded him to ED custody for a period of five days.

Champai Soren charged the BJP of attempting to topple the Jharkhand government, which was elected legitimately, during his speech in the Assembly. Hemant Soren, a party member and former chief minister, leveled a severe accusation against the governor, claiming that Raj Bhavan was “part of the conspiracy”.

According to the JMM, it has enough votes to pass the majority test. Moreover, JMM lawmaker Mithilesh Thakur claimed that a number of BJP lawmakers are supporting their coalition.

Sarfaraz Ahmed, a JMM MLA, has already quit. As a result, the Assembly now only has 80 members. Right now, the majority score is 41.
