Abhijit Mukherjee returns to Congress
In a political homecoming, Abhijit Mukherjee, son of former President Pranab Mukherjee, has rejoined the Congress after spending nearly four years with the Trinamool Congress. The 65-year-old leader was welcomed back into the party at Bidhan Bhavan, the West Bengal Congress headquarters, in the presence of state observer Ghulam Ahmed Mir.

An engineer-turned-politician, Abhijit Mukherjee entered the political arena in 2012 when he won the Jangipur Lok Sabha seat, which was vacated by his father upon becoming the President of India. He successfully defended the seat in the 2014 elections despite a nationwide BJP wave. However, in 2019, he lost the constituency to Trinamool’s Khalilur Rahaman.

Following Trinamool’s sweeping victory in the 2021 Bengal assembly elections, Mukherjee switched allegiance to Mamata Banerjee’s party, crediting her with keeping the BJP at bay. At the time, he claimed that Congress had not given him any significant role beyond primary membership. Yet, his tenure in the Trinamool was largely low-key, with little political activity from him.

Abhijit Mukherjee is also remembered for a major controversy in 2012 when he made sexist remarks about women protesting against the Delhi gangrape case, calling them “dented and painted” and questioning their connection to ground realities. His comments triggered a massive backlash, forcing him to issue an unconditional apology.
