In a surreal turn of events, a highway in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi district turned into a scene straight out of a Bollywood film on Thursday, May 15, as currency notes worth lakhs fluttered through the air triggering chaos, excitement, and danger.

Witnesses described the incident as a “rain of money,” as hundreds of Rs 500 notes scattered across the bustling road, drawing crowds of commuters and passersby who rushed to grab the airborne cash. Amid blaring horns and moving traffic, people were seen risking life and limb to collect the notes in what quickly spiralled into a frenzied scramble.

The bizarre episode is tied to an alleged robbery involving a businessman named Bhavesh, who was enroute from Varanasi to Delhi aboard a luxury bus. According to preliminary reports from Kokhraj police, Bhavesh had stepped off the bus at a roadside dhaba for a meal when unknown miscreants allegedly snatched the bag, he was carrying which held Rs 8-10 lakh in cash.

As the suspects fled, a portion of the money spilled onto the highway, leading to the dramatic scene that unfolded. “Around Rs 1.5 lakh in notes were found scattered across the road,” a police official said.
Social media soon erupted with footage of the chaos, as a viral video showed people darting across lanes, diving for notes while dodging speeding vehicles. The commotion caught the attention of authorities, who reached the spot quickly and began investigating.

“We are still determining whether this was a case of a planned robbery or simply the result of negligence,” officials told NDTV India. CCTV footage from the dhaba and nearby areas is now being scrutinized as part of the ongoing probe.
For now, the mystery remains unsolved but for a brief moment, the Kaushambi highway quite literally became a money road.
