A heartbreaking road accident shook Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh district on Tuesday morning, claiming the lives of at least eight members of a single family and leaving six others injured. The devastating crash unfolded around 10:15 a.m. near Simri village, when a vehicle carrying 15 passengers lost control near the Sunar River bridge and plummeted onto the dry riverbed below.

The victims, all hailing from Jabalpur district, were reportedly returning from a visit to a local “vaidya” — a traditional herbal medicine practitioner — seeking treatment for various ailments. Authorities, however, are also probing whether the family had visited a nearby religious site dedicated to a local deity, as such pilgrimages often draw large groups.
Among the deceased were five sisters from the same family, along with a niece and a grandson — a loss so profound that the community is grappling with the sheer scale of the tragedy. Six people died instantly at the crash site, while two young children, aged eight and ten, succumbed to their injuries later at Damoh District Hospital.

Emergency teams acted swiftly, transferring the remaining injured passengers first to Damoh for immediate treatment and later to Jabalpur Medical College via a specially arranged green corridor to ensure rapid medical attention.

Post-mortem examinations were conducted at Jabera hospital, and the bodies were handed over to the police for further procedures. Investigating officer Arvind Singh confirmed that authorities are still piecing together the exact circumstances that led to the fatal crash.

This incident is just one in a grim series of road accidents that have plagued Madhya Pradesh this week. On Monday alone, three separate crashes across the state claimed ten lives, including another family tragedy on the Jabalpur-Raisen road, where six family members returning from a wedding perished on the spot.

As the state mourns these losses, the spotlight once again falls on road safety and the urgent need for stricter measures to prevent such heartbreaking incidents.
