In India too, thousands of people die by suicide every year. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), people from one particular state in India have the highest suicide rates, and the statistics are alarming.

NCRB had released a report on suicide cases for the year 2022. According to this report, over 1.64 lakh people died by suicide in India in 2021. Among these, Maharashtra recorded the highest number of suicides. As per the NCRB data, there was a 7.2% increase in suicide cases in 2021 compared to 2020. In Maharashtra alone, 22,207 people took their own lives, the highest in the country.

While Maharashtra witnessed more than 22,000 suicides, Tamil Nadu ranked second, with over 18,925 suicides. Madhya Pradesh came third, with 14,965 suicide cases. West Bengal followed in fourth place with 13,500 suicides, and Karnataka stood fifth with 13,056 cases. Suicides in these five states alone accounted for 50.4% of the total suicides in India. The remaining 23 states and eight union territories together contributed 49.6%.

In Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, the number of suicide cases was relatively low, accounting for only 3.6% of the total suicides in the country. In the union territory of Delhi, 2,840 suicide cases were reported.
