Stop Release of Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency
The Delhi unit of the Shiromani Akali Dal has raised serious concerns about the upcoming film Emergency, starring Kangana Ranaut as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The party has urged the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to halt the film’s release, citing fears that it could incite communal tensions and spread misinformation.

In a strongly-worded letter to the CBFC, Paramjit Singh Sarna, the party’s Delhi president, argued that the film’s trailer, which was recently released, presents distorted historical facts that misrepresent the Sikh community. Sarna claims that such portrayals not only promote hatred but also threaten social harmony in Punjab and across the nation. He emphasized that the film could severely damage the social fabric of the country, particularly given the sensitive subject matter of the 1975 Emergency, a period when civil rights were suspended under Indira Gandhi’s Congress-led government.

Sarna stressed that while freedom of speech is vital, it must not be used to spread harmful content that could disrupt the peace and unity of society. He urged the CBFC to use its authority to prevent the film’s release, fearing that it could inflame communal tensions.

Emergency is set to hit the theaters on September 6 and marks Kangana Ranaut’s first release since being elected as a BJP MP from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. The film, produced by Zee Studios, Kangana Ranaut, and Renu Pitti, also stars Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and Shreyas Talpade in key roles. Interestingly, the BJP-led central government recently announced that June 25, the date the Emergency was declared in 1975, would be observed as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ to honor those who endured the hardships of that era.
