A regional turboprop plane carrying 62 people crashed near São Paulo, Brazil, on Friday, resulting in the death of everyone on board, according to local officials at the crash site.

Video footage shared on social media showed the ATR-made aircraft spiraling out of control before plummeting behind a cluster of trees near residential homes, followed by a large plume of black smoke.

City officials in Valinhos, close to Vinhedo, confirmed that there were no survivors. Fortunately, only one home in the nearby condominium complex was damaged, and no residents were injured.
“I have to share some very tragic news,” said President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during an event shortly after the crash. He called for a moment of silence to honor the victims.

The airline Voepass confirmed that the plane, which had departed from Cascavel in the state of Paraná and was enroute to Sao Paulo’s main international airport, crashed in Vinhedo, about 80 km northwest of Sao Paulo. The airline, which is not publicly listed, could not provide additional details on the cause of the crash. The aircraft, registered as PS-VPB, was identified by FlightRadar24 as an ATR 72-500 turboprop.
