An FIR has been filed against the owner and security guard of GT Mall in Bengaluru after they stopped an elderly farmer from entering the mall because he was wearing a dhoti, a traditional Indian garment. This incident occurred on Tuesday evening and has caused widespread outrage and protests from farmer unions demanding action against the mall authorities.

Eyewitnesses reported that the farmer, accompanied by his son, was told by security guards at the mall entrance that he could not enter unless he changed into pants. The farmer felt humiliated and embarrassed by this demand.

The incident gained attention when a video of the altercation went viral on social media, drawing severe criticism. People condemned the mall’s actions as disrespectful and discriminatory. In response, farmer unions staged protests outside the mall on Wednesday morning, demanding an apology and action against the management.

Farmer leader Kuruburu Shanthakumar warned that if the police did not take appropriate action, he would organize a larger protest involving thousands of farmers. This incident is not isolated; earlier this year, a farmer was also initially denied entry into a metro train due to his “untidy” clothes.

The BJP criticized the Congress-led Karnataka government over the incident. BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla shared the video on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), accusing the government of disrespecting farmers. He questioned why farmers are being mistreated and highlighted the hypocrisy, pointing out that even the Karnataka CM wears a dhoti.

Karnataka Congress MLA NA Haris called the incident unacceptable and said he would urge the state government to take action, emphasizing that the dhoti is a traditional dress and should be respected.
