Residents of Bengaluru clean road
In a show of community spirit, students and tech professionals in Bengaluru took charge of cleaning a hazardous stretch of Balagere Road when the local authorities failed to act. This road, between Kadubeesanahalli and Varthur, had become perilous due to silt buildup, making it slippery for two-wheelers and dangerous for pedestrians.

Frustrated by the lack of response from the civic body, BBMP, which cited insufficient funds, a group of IT engineers, college students, and even schoolchildren decided to tackle the problem themselves. Videos and photos circulating on social media showcase these volunteers, equipped with gloves and cleaning tools, diligently removing the silt.

The community-driven effort received widespread praise online. One user noted, “Techies in Bengaluru work for corporates during weekdays, pay taxes, and spend their weekends fixing BBMP’s neglected issues.” Others criticized the authorities for their inaction. “This is shocking. Bangalore municipal bodies should be ashamed of themselves for harassing honest tax-paying citizens,” commented another user.

A third user highlighted the residents’ frustration, saying, “Just imagine how annoyed and irritated they must have been with the roadside dirt causing pollution that they took up the responsibility to clean it up instead of complaining.” Another added, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

The initiative also caught the attention of Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. He responded to the situation by instructing BBMP officials to take immediate action to ensure residents’ safety. He wrote on X, “Sometimes some lessons turn out to be the best learnings. Taking a cue from Bengaluru residents cleaning Balagere Road, I have personally instructed BBMP officials to take immediate action. The comfort and safety of our Bengaluru residents is our priority, and BBMP has been directed to ensure no such incident is ever repeated.”
